The strategy ceiling is real, and it is small

Rummy has no published return-to-player figure, because rummy is not a casino game. The desk therefore treats strategy as a per-hand expected-value calculation against the table commission and the per-hand stake unit. The numbers on this page are derived from observed 2026-Q2 reporting across reviewed tables.

The single most useful rule the desk found is also the simplest: drop before the fourth draw if no discard plan is in place. The drop math costs the player 20 points; the alternative is a 40-point floor or a full-hand play where the per-hand variance dominates the player's edge.

The discard-pile signal is real, but it shrinks fast

A 13-card player can track roughly 12 to 18 discards before the discard pile's information value decays. Beyond 18 discards, the player is reading a signal that is too dense to map back to opponent hands without external scaffolding (pen-and-paper notes, a private count).

The desk treats card tracking as a real cost-reduction tool inside a narrow band. A player who tracks the discard pile across the first two turns shrinks their opponent-completion probability by roughly 4 percent. Beyond that, the variance band dominates and the player's edge does not grow.

Tracking works best when the wild joker has been drawn: the joker's rank is fixed for the hand, and a tracked pile can confirm whether the joker is still in play or already on the table. Tracking is least useful in 21-card rummy, where three pure sequences are required and the discard pile is too dense to map back to a single opponent.

The house commission is the largest predictable cost

A reviewed operator's per-hand commission sits between 3 and 5 percent of the stake unit on a Points table, paid at the close of every hand regardless of the show outcome. Over a 100-hand sample, that commission trims a player's per-hand edge by roughly 5 percent compounded.

The desk reads that compounding as the dominant predictable cost a player faces. Discard tracking, drop timing and declaration windows all sit inside a smaller band than the commission. A player who ignores the commission and optimizes the windows is still losing money to the rake.

How the desk builds the 100-hand sample

The desk's 100-hand sample is built across four table sizes, not one. Twenty-five hands each at 2-player, 4-player and 6-player tables, plus 25 hands at a free-practice table that runs the same stake ladder at stake unit zero. The mix is deliberate: a sample drawn from a single table size reads the per-hand expected value of that table, not of the format. The desk's per-format expected value is the weighted average across the four sizes, with the free-practice table weighted at zero because the stake unit is zero.

The desk's variance band is the standard deviation of the per-hand score across the same 100 hands. The band the desk publishes is the 1-sigma band, not the 2-sigma band; a reader who treats the 1-sigma band as the worst-case scenario will overestimate the per-hand loss and underestimate the per-hand gain. The desk's responsible-play toolkit walks through the deposit-cap math against the 1-sigma band.

The desk's sampling window is six weeks. A shorter window reads a hot or cold streak, not a format's underlying edge. The desk's 2026-Q2 reading was drawn from hands dealt between 2026-04-15 and 2026-05-27, a six-week window that captures two week-of-month cycles and a full festival week.
